Fighting To Survive

He repossessed cars  one night and covered a high school basketball game the next.

Bill Tangen became a newspaper sports editor who perfected his talents into reaching the top. He wound up being named 1977 New York State Sportswriter of the Year (scholastic wrestling). The former athlete covered Port Jervis High School wrestling twins Ed and Lou Banach, who went on to become state titlists, NCAA mat champions at the University of Iowa and then 1984 Olympics freestyle gold medalists. He sat in a hotel room, across from heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, and kidded with him in September 1976. “I’ll switch places with you,” Ali told Bill. “I will drive your car home and you fight Ken Norton.”

Bill watched and listened to “The Greatest” and then wrote a revealing newspaper column that uncovered the real Ali, the man behind the mask. During training camp, Ali’s trainer, Angelo Dundee, told Bill “tomorrow, don’t forget to bring what you have written about Ali. He looks forward to reading your stories every night.” In the late 1990s, Bill began a downhill spiral that was fueled by alcohol addiction.
